Phase I, Block VIII - Aircraft Handling Fundamentals Flashcards
What are the rules for how vehicles are handled/driven around aircrafts?
- Vehicles never pass under any part of parked aircraft
- Be driven or parked adjacent to aircraft to prevent collision
What is required when it is necessary to have the support equipment to have the motor running?
The SE must be manned at all times.
What are the danger areas for aviation?
Intakes, exhaust, flight controls, compressed gases, cryogenics, explosives, hazardous materials, eye, hearing and other industrial environment dangers.
Aircraft static grounding does what?
Harmlessly discharge static electricity to earth or deck.
What are the procedures for aircraft static grounding?
Hook up grounding strap to certified static ground (first) and then to aircraft grounding receptacle (second).
Failure to hook up the grounding strap to the deck first can cause what?
Electrical discharge through the person holding the strap.
Why is aircraft static grounding necessary?
Safely discharge the static electricity generated while in flight or during internal electrical equipment operation.
Why is windshield static grounding necessary?
During flight high voltage (100,000 volts) static electrical charge may build up, and be stored in windshield.
After flight or prolonged exposure to high winds on deck, what must be done before personnel can safely touch the windshield?
Use static charge removal kit to remove static charge build up in windshield.
When the aircraft is not in use, and during maintenance evolution, what must happen?
Aircraft must be tied down to the deck.
What does “NO STEP” markings indicate?
Aircraft critical walkways that cannot be walked on.
In naval aviation, how do we communicate in high tempo, high noise environments?
Aircraft hand signals
When directing fixed wing aircraft, what is the only mandatory signal?
Emergency stop
For rotary wing aircraft, which two signals cannot be changed due to platform variations?
- Wave off
- Hold
What are the rules for towing speed?
Not to exceed 5 mph or speed of slowest walker.
What are two things to avoid during cold weather towing?
- Excessive power
- Sudden movement of tow vehicle
High breakaway loads imposed by snow, ice, or frozen tires may result in damage to what?
Landing gear
The movement of aircraft is done by what team?
Move crew
How many people are in a move crew?
- 6 personnel with brakes
- 7 personnel without brakes
What is the role of the Move Director?
- Assembles move crew
- Ensures personnel are qualified
- Conducts pre-move briefing
- Safe movement of aircraft with emphasis on safety
What is the role of the Brake Rider?
Conducts pre-move inspection of brake system and aircraft to ensure it’s mechanically sound and ready for movement.
What is the role of the Chock Walker?
- Removes, carries, and installs wheel chocks.
- Escorts aircraft during move evolution.
What is the role of the Safety Observers?
- Ensures aircraft is ready to be towed, and ample clearance for aircraft.
- Positioned at wing tips, and tail of air craft.
What is the role of the Tractor Driver?
- Responsible for safe and slow movement of aircraft from hook up to final parking spot.
In regards to aircraft handling (ashore/afloat), F-35 can only utilize what type of tie-down chain?
TD-1B 14 Foot Chain
In regards to aircraft handling (ashore/afloat), how many chains are required for normal weather tie-down?
8
In regards to aircraft handling (ashore), how many chains are required for moderate weather tie-down?
16 for symmetrical
17 for non-symmetrical
In regards to aircraft handling (ashore), how many chains are required for heavy weather tie-down?
30 for symmetrical
31 for non-symmetrical
In regards to aircraft handling (afloat), how many chains are required for moderate weather tie-down?
18 for symmetrical
22 for non-symmetrical
In regards to aircraft handling (afloat), how many chains are required for heavy weather tie-down?
40 for symmetrical
41 for non-symmetrical
