Phase Changes Flashcards
Phase Changes
S > L- Melting L > S- Freezing L > G Vaporization G > L Condensation S > G Sublimation G > S Deposition
Vapor Pressure
Pressure exerted on molecules of solids or liquids that break away from the surface to become gases
Heat of Fusion
Energy it takes to change a substance from solid to liquid/ heat released when substance goes from liquid to solid
Heat of Vaporization
Energy it takes to change liquid to gas, Heat released when it changes from gas to liquid
Triple Point
When all three phases are in equilibrium
Critical Point
The point at any more added temperature would only result in a gas
Heating Curve
When heating up a solid > liquid or liquid >gas, first the temperature of the substance steadily rises until it changes phases. Once it changes phases it stops rising in temperature because it is using all the heat to break inter molecular bonds. Then it begins to steadily increase again. The heat of vaporization is always greater than the heat of fusion
