Phase and Phase Changes Flashcards
Raoult’s Law
This law has to do with vapor pressure lowering, where vapor pressure is proportional to the mole fraction: P = X(total Pressure)
Azeotrope
Liquid mixture of multiple substances that has a constant boiling point greater than or less than that of the substances that make it up, making it difficult to separate since the vapor had the same composition.
Triple Point
Point at which all three phases are in equilibria.

Colligative Properties
Properties affected only by the number of solute particles dissolved and not by their chemical identities.
Critical Point
The highest temperature and pressure when liquid and gas distinction is impossible.
Why does freezing point depression occur?
The solute particles interfere with crystal formation.
Why does boiling point elevation occur?
The vapor pressure of a solution is lower than that of the pure solvent, meaning that more energy is necessary for the vapor pressure to equal atmospheric pressure.
Osmotic Pressure
The pressure exerted by the water level to counterbalance the tendency of water to flow across the membrane.
