Chemical Kinetics and Equilibrium Flashcards
Are stoichiometric coefficients the same as reaction order?
No, the orders of reaction are related to the rates of the reaction which do not necessarily depend on the stoichiometric ratios
What is the only factor that can change the rate of a zero order reaction?
Temperature
How can you use enthalpy change to determine if a reaction is exothermic?
Negative enthalpy change indicates that heat is give off
How do you calculate the change in enthalpy?
By subtracting the initial potential energy of the reactants from the final potential energy of the products
What factors increase reaction rate?
Greater reactant concentration
Higher temperatures
State or type of medium (dependent upon reaction)
Presence of a catalyst
What are the properties of the equilibrium constant?
Pure solids and liquids do not appear in the equilibrium expression Characteristic of a given temperature If K(eq) >>> 1, very little reactants in equilibrium mixture If K(eq) <<< 1, very little products in equilibrium mixture If K(eq) = 1, approximately equal amounts
