Phase Flashcards
What are identical waveforms?
waveforms that are similar in every way, usually the outcome of duplication
What are waveforms of the same event?
2 microphones capturing the same musical event
What are dissimilar waves?
two different takes of any instrument, or otherwise completely different waveforms
What are the three types of phase relationships between similar waveforms?
in phase/phase coherent, out of phase/phase shifted, and phase-inverted
What does in-phase/phase coherent mean?
two similar waveforms start at exactly the same time
What does out-of-phase/phase shifted mean?
waveforms start at different times
What does phase-inverted mean?
both waveforms start at exactly the same time but the amplitude is inverted
What is the Haas effect?
audible delay is only perceived if the time gap between two similar waveforms is greater than 30-40 milliseconds
When is the Haas window, where one should start considering phase?
between 1-35 ms
What can one expect if the time gap between two similar waveforms is less than 35 ms?
comb filtering
What will happen if two similar waveforms are phase-inverted?
they will cancel and either cause level attenuation or cause silence
What are three recording situations that could benefit from phase correction in mixdown?
- ) top/bottom or front/back tracks; will capture opposite pressures
- ) close mic and overheads; close mics could be out of phase with OH
- ) mic and direct; mic will be slightly delayed with direct (gtr mic vs DI)
What are four phase problems that can happen during mixdown?
- ) lack of delay compensation
- ) digital-to-analog conversion on outboard gear
- ) very short delays
- ) EQs; can cause group delay for a range of frequencies
