Panning Flashcards
What 3 factors combine for stereo difference between left and right ears?
amplitude, time (phase), and frequency
What are the 2 pan controls we usually see?
pan pot and pan clock
What is the difference between a pan pot and a pan clock?
pan clocks use time as the pan location
What does a pan pot do?
splits mono signal to left and right channels, attenuates one of the channels by a certain amount, altering relative level between two channels
What are the 2 main principles of panning law?
- ) if two speakers emit the same signal at the same level, the listened on the central plane will perceive a 3dB boost compared with what each speaker produces
- ) when two channels are summed to mono, half the level of each is sent to both speakers
What are the 4 types of pan law?
0dB, -3dB, -4.5dB, -6dB
Which pan law is generally considered the best for mixing?
-3dB
What does a balance pot do?
the input is stereo, and the pot position determines the amount of attenuation applied on each channel
What do autopanners do?
pan audio back and forth in a cyclical way
What are the 4 main parameters of an autopanner?
rate, depth, waveform, and center
