Monitoring Flashcards
What limits our dynamic range in mixdown?
the stages with the least headroom and worst S/N ratio
What is macromixing?
concerned with the overall mix
What is micromixing?
concerned with individual treatment of each instrument
What are the 5 core aspects of the process of mixing?
time, frequency, level, stereo, depth
What do stereo and depth combine to create?
space
What are the 4 principal objectives of mixing?
mood, balance, definition, and interest
What are the 3 domains of balance?
stereo image, frequency, and level
What is definition?
how distinct and recognizable sounds are
What is localization?
where the sound appears to come from on a L-R axis
What is stereo width?
how much of the stereo image a sound occupies
What is stereo spread?
how the various elements are spread across the stereo image
What is the difference between passive and powered speakers?
passive speakers do not have an integrated amplifier, so they must be fed with a speaker-level signal amplified by external amp; active speakers have a built-in amplifier
What are standing waves?
trapped sound waves in a room that are attenuated or boosted at different points along the trap
What is a room mode?
problematic frequency in a room, harmonics of the frequency also trapped
What is flutter echo?
mid and high frequencies bounding between 2 parallel reflective surfaces
