Pharynx Flashcards
nasopharynx
posterior to nasal cavities, anterior to CV1-2
oropharynx
posterior to oral cavity, anterior to CV3
laryngopharynx
posterior to larynx, anterior to CV4-5
salpingopharyngeus
assists other pharyngeal muscles in swallowing (CN X)
palatoglossus
approximates palatoglossal arches to close off oral cavity from oropharynx while chewing (CN X)
palatopharyngeus
pulls up pharynx to shorten it during swallowing (CN X)
valleculae
depressions between posterior tongue and epiglottis. Formed by median and lateral glossoepiglottic folds.
CC: endotracheal intubation, curved blade slips into valleculae
piriform recess
depression lateral to larynx, contains superior br. of internal laryngeal n.
external muscle layer
superior, middle, and inferior constrictors
internal muscle layer
palatopharyngeus, salpingopharyngeus, stylopharyngeus
stylopharyngeus
elevates pharynx and larynx during swallowing/speaking. Passes between sup. and middle constrictors. CN IX
Gap 1
between base of skull and sup. constrictor. Transmits levator veli palatini and auditory tube
Gap 2
between sup. and middle constrictors. Transmits stylopharyngeus and CN IX
Gap 3
between middle and inf. constrictors. Transmits internal br. of superior laryngeal n. and superior laryngeal a.
Gap 4
between inf. constrictor and esophagus. Transmits recurrent laryngeal n. (inf. laryngeal n.) and inf. laryngeal a.
