Cranial Nerves Flashcards
GSA
general somatic afferent
- exteroceptive impulses (pain, temperature, touch) from epithelium of ectodermal origin
- proprioceptive impulses from sensory endings in body wall, tendons, joints
GVA
general visceral afferent
1. sensory impulses (generally pain) from visceral structures within body lined by epithelium of endodermal origin
SSA
special somatic afferent
1. ear and eye (vision, hearing, equilibrium)
SVA
special visceral afferent
1. specialized fibers for smell and taste (visceral b/c functional association with digestive tract)
GSE
general somatic efferent
1. fibers conveying motor impulses to skeletal muscle
GVE
general visceral efferent
- autonomic fibers which innervate smooth muscle of gut tube, blood vessels, cardiac muscle, and fibers which regulate glandular secretion
- subdivided into sympathetic (GVE) and parasympathetic (GVE-P) and found in spinal nerves and some cranial nerves
SSE
special somatic efferent
1. nerve fibers which can reflexively influence sensory input to ear
SVE
special visceral efferent
1. nerves which innervate skeletal muscles derived from visceral arch mesoderm; includes muscles of mastication, facial expression, pharynx, pallate, and larynx (visceral designation nothing to do with autonomic nervous system)
GSE nerves
- all spinal nerves
2. CN III, IV, VI, XI, XII
SSE nerve
- CN VIII
GVE nerves
- all spinal nerves (sympathetic)
2. CN III, VII, IX, X (parasympathetic GVE-P)
