Intramuscular Injection
Inserted into the muscle at 90 degrees angle. (the syringe should be held like a dart, the skin pulled tightly, and the needle inserted at a 90 degree angle).
Subcutaneous
A 1 mL syringe with a 25 gauge, 5/8 needle should be used for injections.
Injections
Are parenteral admission of medication (taken into the body in a manner other than through the digestive canal).
Prophylactic
Means “before” disease (a drug to prevent disease).
Therapeutic
Drug are used after a disease has been diagnosed and are used for treatment.
Cathartic
Is a medication used for the lower intestinal tract.
Glucophage
Hypoglycemic agent used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.
Emulsion
Liquid preparation is a mixture of oil or fat and water that requires shaking before admission. (syrup, solution and tintures do not require shaking (liquid preparation ).
Suspension
Needs shaking for redistribution of the solutes within the solvents (a suspension is not a mixture of oil or fat and water).
1 cubic centimeter (cc) & 1 ml
Have the same volume.
Celebrex
Is a non steroidal anti-flammatory drug that helps to reduce the inflammation associated osteoarthritis.
DEA 41
A form completed when controlled substance are destroyed or contaminated.
Valid reason for charting an injection site
Is to avoid injecting into a major nerve or blood vessel.
Schedule 1 Drug
Are illegal drugs that may not be prescribed (only for research).
Schedule 2 Drug
Cannot be written with refills.
