Pharmacology Flashcards
4 Uses of drugs
Diagnosis
Treatment
Cure
Prevention of dz.
Half-life
the time required for 1/2 of the dose to be rendered inactive or eliminated from the body
Titration
the raising or lowering of a dose to produce a desired effect
Efficacy
the effectiveness of a drug
Pharmacodynamics
the study of an animals response to a drug in absence of dz.
Pharmacotherapeutics
the study of an animals response to a drug in presence of dz.
Pharmacokinetics
the science concerned with drugs absorption, distribution, metabolization, and elimination
Posology
the study of drug dosages
pKa
the pH at which all drug molecules are equally distributed between ionized and non-ionized forms
TI
Therapeutic index: the multiple of times in which you and overdose on medicine before serious side effects appear
High TI= safer
Low TI= harmful
Effective dose
the dose that produced an effective response in 50% of population tested
Lethal dose
the dose that produced a lethal response in 50% of population tested
Solution
Drug particles are completely dissolved in solvent
Suspension
All the drug particles are not completely dissolved in solvent
Syrup
Sucrose and water
vehicle for drug
