Pharmacology 2 Flashcards
What is the most osmotic diuretic in clinical use?
Mannitol
How do osmotic diuretics work?
Retain water in the filtrate by increasing the osmolality of the filtrate
What is the major site of action of the osmotic diuretics?
Proximal tubule
When are osmotic diuretics also used?
Intracranial/intraocular pressure
What is the net effect of aldosterone secretion?
Enhances sodium and water reabsorption
What are the two types of diabetes insipidus?
Neurogenic and nephrogenic
How is neurogenic diabetes insipidus treated?
Desmopressin- synthetic analogue of ADH
What is nephrogenic diabetes insipidus caused?
X-linked recessive mutations in the vasopressin receptor
What is the difference between an acquaretics and diuretics?
Aquaretics cause excretion of water without accompanying secretion of sodium
