Decrease viscosity of mucous secretions to make them easier to expectorate. Administered via nebulizer.

Indications: viscous mucus secretions due to pneumonia, emphysema, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis

Side effects: pharyngitis, oral mucosa inflammation, rhinitis, chest pain

Examples: Pulmozyme, Mucosil or Mucomyst
