block synthesis of oestrogen from testosterone. Also block the conversion of a pre-testosterone to a dif oestrogen.
what converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone?
5a reductase
two main functions of testosterone use
androgenic and anabolic
Adverse effects of Androgens? (give 2 for males, 2 for children and 1 for athletes)
Increase LDL & decrease HDL(increase risk of coronary heart disease). Priapism.
Kids = Premature closure of epiphyseal plates or abnormal sexual maturation.
Athletes = Liver damage

5a reductase inhibitor - Finasteride. BPH and hair loss
why might a 5a reductase inhibitor cause breast enlargement in a male?
testosterone cant be converted to dihyro so results in more oestrogen production
what is Raloxifene?
SERM - partial agonist
what is Fulvestrant
SERM - Full agonist
