- Decrease osteoclast formation/ activation
- Increase osteoclast apoptosis
- Inhibit cholesterol pathway for osteoclast formation
- Net gain of bone mass
Bisphosphonates- Indications
Pagets, bone METS, hyperCa++ of malignancy
Bisphosphonates- AE/ CI
- DIarrhea, abd pain & musc pain
- Esophagitis & esophageal ulcers
Bisphosphonates- Pt ed
Remain upright 30 min following administration
- Large glass of H2O to avoid esophagitis

- Reduces serum total and LDL cholesterol concentrations

- Post menopausal bone loss
- Prevents osteoporosis and risk of hip fracture
- Reduced risk of invasive breast cancer

- VTE, hot flashes, & leg cramping
Calcitonin- MOA
- Inhibits osteoclast and increases osteoblast activity
- Regulation of calcium via bone, renal & GI

- Relives pain associated with osteoporotic fracture
- Postmenopausal osteoporosis

- GI, injection/ inhalation site reaction
- Hypersensitivity rxn

- Postmenopausal prevention of osteoporosis

Inhibit bone resorption
