Phagocytosis Flashcards
What is phagocytosis?
Cell eating microorganisms, other cells + nutrients
What type of immune system is phagocytosis part of?
Innate immune system
What is role of phagocytosis?
Protection from pathogens, disposal of damaged/dying (apoptotic cells), processing + presentation of antigens (Ag) => activation of adaptive immune system
What are phagocytes?
Neutrophils, macrophages + dendritic cells
What WBC is macrophage derived from?
Monocytes
What do monocytes differentiate into?
Macrophages
What are do dendritic cells do?
Form network in order to detect pathogens that can eventually try to gain access into tissues
Capture microbes, involved in phagocytosis, not just eliminate, presents antigen to T cells
Where is dendritic cells found ?
In skin, mucosa and tissues
What are 3 signals that activate T cells?
Antigen recognition
Co stimulation
Cytokines
What are steps of phagocytosis?
Chemotaxis
Recognition + attachment to microbe/dead cells
Engulfment
Killing /digestion of ingested microbe/dead cells
