Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is lymphatic system?
Is network of drainage tubes connected to lymph glands which acts as drainage channels for body’s own tissues
What is lymph?
Interstitial( tissue) fluid containing salts, proteins and cells, originally formed from plasma ultrafiltrate
What are lymph glands?
Filter stations at positioned at intervals along lymph drainage route
What is 2 basic functions of lymph glands?
To clean up lymph before it renters blood stream by sieving out, trapping + destroying foreign materials
Monitoring lymph for tell tale signs of organic predators e.g. infection so playing vital role in our immune system responses
What are 3 functions of lymphatic system?
Fluid balance (homeostasis) => clears away mess circulatory system leaves behind
Tissue immunity => lymphatic system houses immune system + is responsible for tissue immunosurveillance
Fat homeostasis => lymphatic system is responsible for gut fat absorption + peripheral fat reabsorption
Chronic oedema=
Lymphatic failure
Lymphoedema=
Absolute lymphatic failure
