phagocytosis Flashcards
what is phagocytosis?
the cellular response of engulfing solid particles by the cell membrane to form an internal phagosome by phagocytes
what is phagocytosis used for?
a specific second line of defence against invading pathogens
what is stage 1 of phagocytosis?
a phagocyte recognises the foreign invader/ antigens on a pathogen
what is stage 2 of phagocytosis?
the cytoplasm of the phagocyte moves around the pathogen, engulfing it ENDOCYTOSIS
what is stage 3 of phagocytosis?
the pathogen is now contained in a phagocytic vacuole/ phagosome in the cytoplasm of the phagocyte
what is stage 4 of phagocytosis?
a lysosome fuses with the phagocytotic vacuole and the lysozymes in the lysosome break down the pathogen
what is stage 5 of phagocytosis?
the phagocyte presents the pathogens antigens on its surface to activate other immune system cells. The phagocyte is now an antigen presenting cell
what are phagocytes?
white blood cells produced in the bone marrow
what are phagocytes responsible for?
removing dead cells and invasive microorganisms
what type of immune response do phagocytes carry out?
non specific
what are the 2 types of phagocytes?
neutrophils, macrophages
