cell mediated response Flashcards
1
Q
what are lymphocytes?
A
white blood cells involved in the specific immune response
2
Q
where are lymphocytes made?
A
bone marrow
3
Q
what cells are involved in the cell mediated response?
A
T cells and body cells
4
Q
why is the cell mediated response specific?
A
because T cells respond to antigens on the surface of cells
5
Q
what are APCs?
A
antigen presenting cells- any cell that presents a non self antigen on their surface
6
Q
give 4 examples of APCs
A
infected body cells, macrophages, cells of a transplanted organ, cancer cells
7
Q
why are T cell responses cell mediated?
A
because T cells only respond to antigen which are presented on APCs and not antigens detached from cells
8
Q
describe the cell mediated response
A
- once a pathogen has been engulfed + destroyed by a phagocyte, the antigens are positioned on the cell surface so the P is now an APC
- tH cells have receptors on their surface which can attach to the antigens
- this activates the tH cells to divide by mitosis to make clones
- cloned tH cells differentiate into different cells such as memory cells or cytotoxic T cells
