pH Flashcards
True or False:
Hydrogen and hydroxide ions not reactive.
False:
They are very reactive.
Acid:
A compound that donates hydrogen ions to a solution. An acidic solution has a higher concentration of H+ than OH-.
Base:
A compound that accepts hydrogen ions and removes the from the solution. The more basic a solution is the higher its OH- concentration and the lower its H+ concentration.
pH scale:
A scale used to determine how acidic or basic a solution is.
pH stands for POTENTIAL OF HYDROGEN.
What is a buffer?
A substance that minimizes the changes in pH.
Example:
Sodium Bicarbonate
Acid Precipitation:
Rain, snow, or fog with a pH lower than 5.6.
Hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-).
When ions form as a result of breaking apart from the aqueous solution they form hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-).
