Enzymes Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
Proteins that function as biological catalysts, increasing the rate of a reaction without being consumed by the reaction.
What is a catalyst?
Something that speeds up a biological reaction.
What ending indicates an enzyme.
-ase.
What is a substrate?
Molecule that is being broken down or put together.
What is an active site?
A region that the substrate fits into.
What is the optimum performance requirements of enzymes?
Temperature between 35-40 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit)
pH range of 6-8
What does denature mean?
The destruction of an enzyme so that it no longer functions properly.
What is an inhibitor?
Chemical that interferes with the enzyme activity.
What is a Competitive Inhibitor?
Competitive inhibitors block substrates from entering the active site.
What is a Noncompetitive inhibitor?
Noncompetitive inhibitors does not ended the active site. However it attaches to the enzyme somewhere else and changes the shape of the enzyme so that the substrate can no longer fit into the active site.
What is a feedback inhibitor?
An internal control or a hormone or enzyme that causes a reduction in the activity once the end product reached a specific concentration.
What is energy of activation?
Amount of energy needed to push the reactants over its energy barrier.
