Ph Flashcards
1
Q
What are the normal levels of phosphate in the body?
A
- Normal = 0.85 - 1.45 mmol/L
2
Q
What are the symptoms of
hyperphosphatemia?
A
- Muscle cramps
- Tetany
- Perioral numbness or tingling
3
Q
What are the causes of hyperphosphatemia?
A
- Drugs
- Amphotericin (liposomal form)
- Calcitriol - Chronic kidney disease
- High diet intake
- Hypoparathyroidism
- Low level of calcium, therefore fewer phosphate-binders available, allowing phosphate levels to rise
4
Q
How do you treat hyperphosphatemia?
A
- Calcium-containing preparations
- They act as an effective phosphate binder - Sevelamer
- For treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients on dialysis
5
Q
How does
HYPOphosphatemia
occur?
A
- Prolonged periods (e.g. 4 days or more) of starvation
6
Q
What are the symptoms of
HYPOphosphatemia?
A
- Arrhythmias
- Rhabdomyolysis
- Seizures
- Confusion
7
Q
How do you treat
HYPOphosphatemia?
A
- Phosphate supplementation
- Oral for mild
- IV for moderate-severe
