Na Flashcards
1
Q
What is the normal range for Na? When are they considered hyper- or hypo-?
A
- Normal: 133 - 146 mmol/L
Hypo and Hyper is lower or higher (respectively) than the normal range
2
Q
What can
hypernatraemia indicate?
A
- Water depletion (Water loss from the body, meaning the sodium contents in the blood
are more concentrated than before) - A possible result of renal failure
3
Q
Hypernatraemia - symptoms
A
- Not much symptom
- Thirst, fatigue, confusion
- Confusion and coma can occur above 155 mol/L
4
Q
Hypernatraemia - drugs
A
- Phenytoin
- Lithium
- Sodium bicarbonate/ cholride
- CS
- Effervescent formulation
- Oestrogens/ androgens
PLS CEO
5
Q
Hypernatraemia - treatment
A
- Dextrose infusion
- Dialysis
6
Q
Hyponatraemia - symptoms
A
< 100-200mmol/L
- Muscle weakness
- Confusion
- Cardiac failure
7
Q
Hyponatraemia - drugs
A
Carbamazepine
Diuretics
Desmopressin / Vasopressin
NSAIDs
SSRIs/ TCAs
Certain Drugs Don’t Need Salt
8
Q
Hyponatraemia - treatment
A
- Mannitol
OR - Demeclocycline Or
- Limiting fluid intake (depending on the cause)
But give SODIUM (Sodium chloride IV)
9
Q
Do you give Sodium bicarbonate tablets for sodium depletion?
A
No
Sodium levels are usually managed by fluid intake
10
Q
When do you give
Sodium bicarbonate tablets?
A
- To increase the pH of the urine
- e.g. for UTI - Chronic acidotic states
- e.g. Uraemic acidosis or renal tubular acidosis
