Petrissage Flashcards
1
Q
What is petrissage?
A
- Manipulation of muscles by lifting, rolling and squeezing soft tissues
- Muscle fibre separation by disrupting fibrous and fascicular adhesions
2
Q
Physiological effects
A
- Aids interchange of tissue fluid
- Aids removal of chemical irritants
- Reduces superficial adhesions and restrictions in the fascia
- Passively stretches muscle fibres
- Reflexively relax muscles
- Change muscle tone
3
Q
Other effects
A
- Tissue warming
- Reduces muscle spasm
- Minimise atrophy (decreasing of tissue)
- Calming/stimulating effect (dependant on rhythm and pressure)
- Palpation and assessment tool
4
Q
Application
A
- Parallel to run of muscle fibres
- Superficial is used to warm tissue
- Deep if using to stretch muscle fibres
- ## Generally medium paced

Q
Hand skills
A
- Wringing
- Rolling
- Kneading
- Knuckling
