pet food Flashcards
does freeze drying kill microbes?
no!
is pet food/supplements regulated?
YES! by FDA and state feed control officials
but surveillance limitations make it seem like it is not regulated
What is AAFCO (association of American Feed Control Officials)
- NOT regulatory body
- labeling guidelines
- ingredient definitions
- nutrient concentrations (categories: adult and growth/repro, NOT senior)
AAFCO meat definition
striated skeletal/tongue/diaphragm/heart/esophageal muscle derived from slaughtered (for human consumption) animals
AAFCO byproduct definition
non-rendered organs (e.g. kidneys, liver, brain, etc; excludes
hair hoof, horn and teeth) from slaughtered (for human consumption) animals
AAFCO meat meal definition
meat that is rendered (fat removed, lighter)
grains are good sources of:
energy (starch)
amino acids, gluten
micronutrients
monitor for mycotoxins
Raw food
higher risk of microbial pathogens (salmonella, listeria) in meat based food without proper heat based step
maybe ok IF commertial manufacturer is proactive about pathogen elimination
homemade raw: not pathogen control
