What is a personality disorder?
A personality that is persistent across the patients lifespan, in different settings and in a way that’s not better explained by another disorder.
What is borderline personality disorder?
A disorder of mood and how someone interacts with other people
What are some main features of borderline personality disorder?
Unstable moods Intense relationships that are unstable Splitting Terrified of abandonment Self harm and suicide is common Unsure who they are and what they prefer
What is splitting?
When someone with borderline personality disorder sees something as either completely good or completely bad. And their opinion changes frequently.
What treatment can be given to someone with borderline personality disorder?
Mentalization based treatment
How many people with borderline personality disorder recover?
60% of people no longer meet the criteria 6 years after diagnosis.
When should someone with borderline personality disorder be treated inpatient?
Only when it is vital because this might be harmful to the patient in the long run.
What is antisocial personality disorder?
The person shows persistent criminal misconduct and is remorseless to the people affected by it.
The person displays impulsive, irresponsible and criminal behaviour.
What are common features seen in antisocial personality disorder?
Little empathy Substance abuse No remorse Manipulative Impulsive Fail to follow the law or cultural norms
What is the diagnostic criteria for antisocial personality disorder?
Must be >18yrs
Have a conduct disorder
What can cause personality disorders?
Early childhood trauma.
