Personality Flashcards
Hollander approach to interactionist theory
Personality is made of three factors
1 - The core of the performer - values / beliefs of the individual
2- Typical response - the use of inherent traits displayed to specific situations.
3 - Role related behaviour - performer may adapt to adopt very specific role when the situation demands
Lewin approach for interactionist theory
A theory which combines trait (nature) and social learning (nurture) to predict specific situation
behaviour = situation - F (Personality x Environment)
This suggest that behaviour is a function of personality and environment.
Credulous Approach
You believe the theories (Lewin and Hollander) that personality plays a part in predicting behaviour.
Sceptical approach
You don’t believe the theories (Lewin and Hollander). You doubt that personality can predict your behaviour.
Trait Theory
The belief that you are born with characteristics.
The social learning approach
Suggested behaviour is learned from significant others by socialisation. e.g. from your parents and social interactions as a child.
What is socialisation
What are the two types
Developing personality traits by associating and learning form others.
Primary - from our family and parents
Secondary - Schools, media, external factors
Vicarious Learning
Lost known as observational learning, occurs when a person is motivated to learn by watching someone else work and be rewarded.
E.g. watching someone winning an Olympic medal
What are the 3 personality theories
1) The social learning approach
2) The Hollander approach to the interactionist theory
3) The Lewin approach to the interactionist theory
Def of attitude
Ideas charged with emotion that produces specific behaviour or a specific situation.
Also referred to a mental and neural state of readiness towards an attitude object.
Socialisation
Process where cultural values are learnt by associating with others
Parts of the Triassic model
1 - Cognitive - your beliefs and thoughts e.g. belief in exercise benefits
2 - Affective - your feelings or emotional responses e.g. enjoying training
3 - Behavioural - your actions or intended behaviour e.g. training three times a week
Attitudes can be positive or negative
List ways that positive attitudes are made.
- familiarisation
- learned from role models
- learned by enjoyable experiences
- learned from beliefs
- learned by conditional behaviour
Cognitive Dissonance
A challenge to existing beliefs causing disharmony in and individual and a motivation to change attitudes
Persuasive communication
- you can be talked around but it is hard if the core beliefs are stable making people resilient to change.
- new information should outweigh
