1)family diversity is increasing:in todays society there is so many different types of families E.G lone parents,single parenthood, same sex etc
2) what counts as family is not longer limited to marriage and blood:people today can chose what counts as family
E.G-family friends,pets, dead relatives ,neighbours
-due to media people can continue to remember their dead relatives
3)scientific developments:led to new types of families being formed-Donor conception+IVF
-genes are no longer seen as defining family but who raises them

• genes are still a significant part of identity
