DEMOGRAPHY-INFLUENCES ON MIGRANT TRENDS Flashcards
Why has globalisation influenced migration
Gloablisation:growing interconnectedness between countries
-Countries have become increasingly connected thanks to things such as trade links and transport connections
-Increased legal and illegal for multiple reasons
Legal migration-many businesses and industries operate on a global scale, commonplace for people to move for work purposes eg-medical purposes.Transport networks improving makes the actual migration process easier.Communication technology is useful as people are able to research the opportunities which are available worldwide, helpign them to chose where to migrate to
Illegal migration-those who aren’t permitted to migrate legally, globalisation has opened up opportunities to do so regardless.Commonplace for trafficking gangs to advertise services online which desperate people will then access.Gangs take advantage of global transport routes, smuggling people across the borders in Lorries or ships.Risky but trafficking gangs don’t care about wellbeing of the people they are smuggling
Evaluation of globalisation
-Although globalisation increases connections between countries this doesn’t give everyone the same opportunities to migrate freely
How has push and pull factors influenced migration?
Push factors:things which drive a person out of their country of origin
EG-war,lack of educational opportunities
-People who may be members of an ethnic or religious minority which are being discriminated against their own country or people part of the LGBT in countries where homosexuality is illegal, may seek to escape and move country where their status will be protected
Pull factors:things which may attract a person to the country they hope to migrate to
-This includes anto-discrimation laws, standards of living and pay conditions for jobs.May include things which are personal to a person eg-family or friends already living in the uk
Evaluation of push and pull factors
-some argue that the uk is less attractive nowadays. In recent years the government established ‘hostile environment’ towards migration, which could put people off coming and make it harder for people to settle
How has immigration and border controls influence migration?
- Each country has its own border control policies which will determine who can and who cant legally migrate to that place
- Countries can also dictate to prospective migrations what income they need to earn and what qualifications they must possess before allowing them to enter the country->determines what type of people are eligible to move there
Evaluation of immigration policy and border control
Border control does not always successfully prevent illegal migration
