Inequalities exist between children

A

-Children from different social backgrounds experience inequalities in their child hood:
1)Where they live in the world
-In some parts of the world some children still go to work from the age of 5 and seen as an economic asset.Children are also known to fight in wars and be traifficked into prostitution
2)Social class backround
-class a child is born into can determine what sorts of experiences they will have.More likely to suffer from health and behavioural disorders.Children are more likely to be involved in accidents in low income families and w/c children are less likely to do well in education and perform worse than m/c
3)Ethnic or religious backgroud:
-British Asian children are subjected to stricter controls compared to their white and black peers
-Girls are less likely to be given many freedoms and there is an importance placed on respecting elders and showing honour towards your family
4)Gender
-studies show that girls and boys continue to be treated differently from their parents
Gender role socialisation-Boys encouraged to be more outgoing and girls encouraged to be emotionally open

What are the inequalities that exist between children and adults ? (adult control)

A

1) Neglect and abuse
- Neglect:situation whereby parents aren’t ensuring their Childs needs are being met
- Abuse:parents harming their children, emotionally,physically or sexually
2) Control over children space
- Adults have the power to indicate where children can and cant go
- Parents are less likely to allow their children to enjoy their own space eg-walking to school alone
- sign of overprotection
3) Control over childrens time
- dictate what children can do with their daily time eg-putting restrictions on when they can sleep or eat
- secondly,control the speed at which children can go grow up overtime eg-age of sleepovers
4) Control over children bodies
- Adults tend to make assumptions about what children can do with their personal space
- Parents dictate what they can do with their bodies eg-how to dress or wear their hair
- Adults scold at bodily activities eg-biting nails
5) Control over children resources
- Control access our money
- Some parents give pocket money others don’t
- Some parents attach conditions to children access to money EG-chores in exchange for money

What is the feminist view on the inequality between adults and children ?

A

-argue that the power imbalance between adults and children is implanted by men
GITTENS:
-calls this age patriarchy:refers to a situation in which th father of the family asserts his dominance on the grounds that he is both older and male, daughters are subjected to stricter controls
HOCKEY AND JAMES:
-Children may react differently if they feel they are being oppressed by adults in their life
-Some children will act up:respond by engaging in grown up behaviours eg-smoking,drinking alcohol and staying out late.Sends message to parents that they cant be controlled
-Some children will act down:engage in immature behaviours eg-talking in babyish voices.Sends message to parents that they will act like a baby if they will be treated like one
