persistent infections Flashcards
persistent infections occur b/c
adaptive IS cannot clear infection efficiently. virions produced intermittently or continuously for lifespan of person
diff btwn chronic and slow/latent infections
chronic can be cleared eventually, slow/latent last for lifetime
eg of latent persistent infections
Herpes simple virus. 1st acute infection is followed by period w/out infection. virions produced during periods of activation, w/ or w/o symptomes
slow persisent infections
eg HIV. virions produced during initial acute infection. flu like symptoms. may not have symptoms till yrs later. w/ treatment is fatal
transforming persistent infection
some viruses can caused infected cells to grown abnormally and change morphology. called transformed. can cause cancer
benign tumor
clone of cells that form a localised mass
malignant tumor
tumor that infiltrated tissues and causes damage. is cancer
metastasis
if cells separate and enter lymph nodes for blood can form secondary tumors called metastasis
viruses that cause cancer
hepatitis virus causes liver and cervical cause
