Permanent and induced magnets Flashcards
1
Q
What is an induced magnet?
A
- Any material that is influenced by a magnetic field and has the potentential of becoming a magnet
2
Q
Common magnetic materials
A
- Nickel
- Cobalt
- Iron
- Steel (alloy of iron)
3
Q
Permanent vs induced magnets
A
- Permanent magnet: produce their own magnetic field all of the time
- Induced magnet: only produce their own magnetic field temporarily, when in the field of a permanent magnet
4
Q
Characteristics of induced magnets
A
- ALWAYS experience an attractive force with the permanent magnet
- The pole in contact to the permanent magnet will be opposite to that of the permanent magnet
5
Q
Hard vs soft magnet
A
- Soft magnetic material: loses magnetism very quickly
- Hard magnetic material: loses magnetism slowly
6
Q
What is a magnetic field?
A
- The area around a magnet in which its force of magnetism can be felt
