Moments Flashcards
1
Q
What is a moment?
A
- The roational / turning effect of a force around a pivot
2
Q
Equation to find a moment?
A
- Moment (Nm) = force (N) X distance (m)
3
Q
What is important when measuring the moment of a force?
A
- The distance must be the perpendicular distance form the pivot
4
Q
How to we describe a moment?
A
- Magnititude in Nm
- Direction in clockwise or anti-clockwise
5
Q
What is the principle of moments?
A
- If an object is balanced, the total anticlockwise moment is equal to the total clockwise moment on the object
6
Q
What is the job of a lever?
A
- Increase the size of a force acting on an object, making it easier to move
7
Q
What is the job of a gear?
A
- Multiply the effect of a turning motion using moments
8
Q
How do we find by how much the moment is increased in gears?
A
- The amount of times the radius of gear B is greater than gear A is the amount of times by which the moment will be increased
9
Q
Characteristics of gears
A
- Adjacent gears always move in opposite directions
- Total work done between both gears remains the same, only the moment is increased
