Perls Prussian Blue Stain Flashcards
1
Q
What does stain detect?
A
Ferric (Fe3+) iron deposits
Commonly found in hemosiderin (iron-storage complex)
2
Q
What reaction occurs with potassium ferrocyanide?
A
It reacts with ferric iron to form an insoluble blue pigment
The pigment is known as Prussian blue, or ferric ferrocyanide.
3
Q
What is counterstain?
A
Eosin
4
Q
What is the function of HCl?
A
Releases ferric (Fe3+) iron from cells.
5
Q
Principle of PPB
A
Perls solution contains HCl and potassium ferrocyanide.
HCl releases ferric iron from cells.
Ferric iron reacts with potassium ferrocyanide to produce ferric ferrocyanide, insoluble blue pigment.
