Peritoneal Cavity & Mesenteries Flashcards
What is the parietal peritoneum?
covering that lines inner abdominal wall surfaces
What is the visceral peritoneum?
covering that lines organs
What are the subdivisions of the peritoneal cavity? How do they communicate?
Greater sac and lesser sac
Communicate via epiploic foramen
Where is the location of the lesser sac?
It is between the lesser and greater omentum
Where is the greater sac?
Below the lesser sac, encompasses everything else
What is contained in the supracolic compartment? (3)
stomach, liver, spleen
What is contained in the infracolic compartment?
small intestine, ascending/descending colon
What separates the supracolic and infracolic compartments?
The transverse megacolon
What are the boundaries of the epiploic foramen?
anterior - hepatoduodenal ligament
posterior - peritoneum covering IVC
inferior - 1st part of duodenum
superior - peritoneal reflection from liver to IVC
What is a mesentery?
A double-layered peritoneal membrane structure attached to the posterior abd. wall and the jejunum and ileum. Contains arteries, veins, nerves, lymphatics
What are the functions of the peritoneum? (3)
Produces peritoneal fluid Minimizes friction (cuz fluid) Resists infection (produces Abs, leukocytes, localizes infection)
Where is the lesser omentum, and what does it attach to?
Superior to the greater omentum.
Extends from liver to lesser curvature of the stomach (hepatogastric l.) and first part of duodenum (hepatoduodenal l.)
Where is the greater omentum, and what does it attach to?
Inferior to lesser omentum
Extends from greater curvature of stomach, 1st part of duodenum and to transverse colon
Where does the hepatoduodenal ligament attach?
the 1st part of the duodenum to liver
Where does hepatogastric ligament attach?
liver to stomach
