Bony Pelvis and Landmarks Flashcards
Where separates the greater pelvis from the lesser pelvis?
The pelvic brim
What is the pelvis major?
the false pelvis
What is the pelvis minor?
the true pelvis
What are the major differences between the male and female pelvis? (4)
- female pelvis is larger, broader
- male pelvis is taller (higher iliac crests)
- female inlet is larger, more oval
- male inlet is smaller, more heart-shaped
What are the boundaries of the pelvic inlet? (5)
- posterior = sacral promontory
- posterolateral = margin of sacral ala
- lateral = arcuate line
- anterolateral = pecten pubis
- anterior = pubic crest and pubic symphysis
What ligaments stabilize the sacroiliac joint? (3)
- anterior sacroiliac ligament
- posterior sacroiliac ligament
- interosseus ligaments
What forms the lateral pelvic wall? (4)
- part of hip below pelvic inlet (body of pubis, superior and inferior rami, ischium, ischial spine)
- obturator internus m. and obturator fascia and obturator membrane
- sacrotuberous ligament
- sacrospinous ligament
What 4 muscles make up the pelvic diaphragm?
- coccygeus
- iliococcygeus
- pubococcygeus
- puborectalis
What muscles make up the levator ani muscle?
- iliococcygeus
- pubococcygeus
- puborectalis
What typically causes overflow incontinence?
A blockage of the urethra so that the bladder can’t empty properly
What typically causes stress incontinence? (2)
- Increased abdominal pressure
- a relaxed pelvic floor caused by removal of prostate gland/stretching of the muscles
What typically causes urge incontinence? (2)
- bladder being oversensitive from infection (cystitis)
- neurological disorders
What in the male can cause overflow incontinence?
BPH
