Peripheral Vascular Disease Flashcards
Aneurysm
an abnormal dilatation (bulge) in the wall of an artery
Normally, the walls of arteries are thick and muscular, allowing them to withstand a large amount of pressure. Occasionally, however, a weak area develops in the wall of an artery. This allows the pressure within the artery to push outwards, creating a bulge or ballooned area called an “aneurysm.”
Intermittent Claudication
an aching, crampy, tired, and sometimes burning pain in the legs that comes and goes
.it typically occurs with walking and goes away with rest
.due to poor circulation of blood in the legs caused by arterial spasm or narrowing (atherosclerosis)
Raynaud’s Disease
causes some areas of your body — such as your fingers and toes — to feel numb and cold in response to cold temperatures or stress
.Smaller arteries that supply blood to your skin narrow, limiting blood circulation to affected areas (vasospasm).
Thrombophlebitis
inflammation of a vein (usually a leg vein) where a thrombus has formed
Gangrene
The death of body tissue due to a lack of blood flow or a bacterial infection
.most commonly affects the extremities, including your toes, fingers and limbs
