Eye Diseases Flashcards
Cataract

conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines are eyelid, and eyeball
Glaucoma

Corneal Conditions Requiring Transplant
. Transplant
. corneal dystrophy
. scarring from infections (eye herpes or fungal keratitis)
. Excessive swelling (edema) of the cornea.
. Thinning of the cornea and irregular shape (keratoconus)
. Chemical burns on the cornea or damage from an eye injury
Macular Degeneration:
age-related degeneration of
the part of the eye which contain the light-sensing cells
that provide
sharp, central vision
Retinal Detachment
detachment (lifted or pulled from normal position) of the retina which is the eye layer containing light-sensitive cells; may lead to blindness
Frequent Causes of Eye Injury:
Scratched eye (corneal abrasion)
Penetrating or foreign objects in the eye
Chemical burn
Blunt injury resulting in ‘black eye’ with or without subconjuctival hemorrhage
