Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
A bundle of neuron fibers found outside the CNS
Nerve
Nerve Structures:
I. Endoneurium
II. Perineurium
III. Epineurium
Carries sensations
Afferent (Sensory) Nerves
Carries motor fibers
Efferent (Motor) Nerves
both sensation & motor fibers
Mixed Nerves
Note:
All spinal nerves are MIXED

Optic Nerve
Function:
a. Nerve supply for the muscles that direct the
eyeball.
• CN4: Superior Oblique
• CN6: Lateral Rectus
• CN3: Superior & Inferior Recti; Inferior Oblique
b. Controls cardinal g
Cranial Nerve 3, 4, 6
Largest cranial nerve because of it’s sensory
distribution
Function:
Motor: Muscles of mastication
Sensory: Facial Sensation
• Opthalmic Division
• Maxillary Division
• Mandibular Division
Trigeminal Nerve
• Function:
• Motor: Facial Expressions
• Sensory: Taste for the anterior 2/3 of the
tongue
• Autonomic: Salivation & Lacrima formation
Facial Nerve
Balance & Hearing
Acoustic Nerve
Function
• Motor: Stylopharyngeus Muscle
• Sensory: Taste & general sensation to
posterior 1/3 of the tongue
• Autonomic: Parotid gland; monitors carotid
body & sinus
Glossopharyngeal Nerve
Function
• Motor: Muscles of the pharynx & larynx
• Sensory: Skin to the pinna of the external ear & sensation to pharynx, larynx & epiglottis
• Autonomic: Innervates visceral organs of the thorax & abdomen
Vagus Nerve
Function
• 2 parts
• Cranial: supplies pharyngeal muscles
• Spinal: Supplies SCM & Trapezius
Accessory Nerve
Function: Supplies tongue muscles
Hypoglossal Nerve
• Muscle: Deltoid
• Skin: shoulder & superior thorax
Axillary
• Muscle: Triceps & Wrist extensors
• Skin: Posterior upper limb
Radial
• Muscle: Wrist flexors; Some hand intrinsics
• Skin: forearm
Median
• Muscle: Arm flexors
• Skin: Lateral forearm
Musculocutaneous
• Muscle: Some wrist flexors & most of hand
intrinsics
• Skin: hand
Ulnar
• Muscle: Hip flexors & Knee extensors
• Skin: anteromedial leg & thigh
Femoral
• Muscle: Adductors
• Skin: Medial thigh
Obturator
• Largest nerve in the body
• Muscle: hip extensors & knee flexors
• Skin: Lower trunk & posterior th
Sciatic Nerve
• Muscle: Peroneals
• Skin: lateral leg & foot
Common Fibular Nerve (Superficial & Deep)
• Muscle: Calf muscles
• Skin: Posterior leg & foot
Tibial Nerve
Innervate gluteal muscles of the hip
Superior & Inferior Gluteal Nerve
motor subdivision of PNS that controls body activities automatically
Autonomic Nervous System
• Thoracolumbar division
• T1-L3
• aka Fight or Flight Response; Emergency Response;
Stress Response; Excitemetn; Exercise; Adrenergic
Response
• Predominant Neurotransmitters
• Epinephrine
• Norepinephrine
Sympathetic nervous system
• Craniosacral Division
• Cranial Nerves: 10, 9, 7, 3
• Sacral Nerves: S2, S3, S4 (urinary bladder)
• aka Rest & Digest; Cholinergic Response
• Predominant Neurotransmitter
• Acetylcholine
Parasympathetic nervous system
3 Major Area of the Ear:
- External Ear
- Middle Ear
- Internal Ear
The Eye: Muscles
- Superior Oblique
- Inferior Oblique
- Superior Rectus
- Inferior Rectus
- Lateral Rectus
- Medial Rectus
Auricle & External Acoustic Meatus
External Ear
• small, air-filled, mucosa-lined cavity in the
temporal bone
• (+) Ossicles
• Malleus, Anvil, Stapes
Middle ear
• Bony labyrinth
• 3 subdivisions: cochlea,vestibule & semicircular canals
Internal ear
▪ (+) Maculae
▪ Reports changes in the position of the head in space wth respect to the pull of gravity when body is moving.
Static
▪ (+) Dynamic Equilibrium Receptors
▪ respond to angular or rotational movements of the head rather than to straightline movements.
Dynamic
