Periodontal Prognosis Flashcards
what does risk mean?
the probability that an individual will get a specific disease in a given period of time
What does risk indicators mean?
probable or putative isk factors that have been identified in cross sectional studies but not confirmed by longitudinal studies
Some risk indicators are:
HIV, AIDS
osteoporosis
infrequent dental visit
risk factors are
environmental or biologic factors that increase the chance that an individual will get the disease
some risk factors are
smoking
diabetes
Pathogenic bacteria
microbial tooth deposits
Risk determinants/background characteristics are
associated with risk for disease but don’t cause disease
some risk determinants/ ….. are
genetic factors age gender socioeconomic status stress
Risk markers/ predictors are
associated with risk for disease but don’t cause disease
some risk markers are
previous history of periodontal disease
bleeding on probing
important concepts to consider when determining prognosis:
timing of projection
individual teeth vs. overall dentition
end point of observation
long term prognosis is described as how many years?
5 years
periodontal disease progress:
it doesn’t progress uniformly throughout dentition
primary goal/end point for perio disease?
mainly periodontal stability
general factors that may affect prognosis
patient compliance
cigarette smoking
diabetes mellitus
other systemic factors ( neutrophil dysfunction, down’s, etc)
1 modifiable risk factor
smoking
