Periodisation Flashcards
Definition of periodisation
Occurs when training is split into specific time periods so the performer achieves peak performance at a certain time (e.g. Competition)
What is double periodisation
Performer peaks twice
Example of double periodisation
Commonwealth and Europeans
What is undulating periodisation
Performer peaks all year round
Example of undulating periodisation
Games player, e.g. football
What are the three stages of periodisation
Macro-cycle, meso-cycle, micro-cycle
What is the macro-cycle and give sporting examples
1-4 year training programme with the aim of achieving peak performance at a certain time, it is the overall cycle
E.g. Jessica Ennis would have a macro-cycle of 4 years where as a games player would have a macro-cycle of 1year
What is the meso-cycle
Lasts 4-6weeks, made up of lots of micro-cycles, has 3 stages
Explain the first stage of the meso-cycle with an example
E.g. The premier league
1) pre-season (late June to early August)
Develop baseline fitness, increase in training intensity at the end, specific training for specifi position, tactics, basic team formation, style of play
Explain the second stage of the meso-cycle with an example
E.g. The premier league
2) competition (September to April)
Less training, close to full fitness, too much training could lead to injury, refining skills (weaknesses)
Explain the final stage of the meso-cycle with an example
E.g. The premier league
3) off-season/recovery (May to June)
Active recovery, retain baseline fitness
Name some benefits of periodisation
- minimise potential weaknesses
- maintain motivation
- princiliples of training
- minimise potential injury (moderation)
- fitness testing (before, middle and after) to measure progress
A benefit of periodisation is fitness testing. Explain the benefits of fitness testing
- compare performers
- strengths and weaknesses
- unique training programme
- team selection
- aid recovery
- transfer from sport to sport
