What is periodisation?
Dividing the training year into specific sections for a specific purpose
What are the 3 cycles?
Macrocycle, mesocycle, microcycle
What is the macrocycle?
The long-term planning phase involving 3 periods - preparation, competition and transition
What is the mesocycle?
Usually between 4 to 12 weeks of specific training. Here the athlete can work on their necessary components of fitness such as cardiovascular fitness for a boxer.
What is the microcycle?
Planning for a week, a few days or just one training session. This is repeated throughout the duration of the mesocycle.
What is tapering?
A reduction in the volume and/or intensity of training leading up to the competition. This is done to maintain fitness and make sure the player is fresh and not injured.
What is peaking?
Planning and organising training so that the performer is at their peak both mentally and physically for a major competition.
