PERIODIC TABLE- group 7 Flashcards
how many electrons do they want to gain
1 electron
how is this electron pulled into the outer shell
by the protons in the nucleus
why is it easier to pull the electron into the outer shell if the atom is small
because the distance is less so it ‘feels’ the force more.
what does it mean if the electron is being pulled closer to the nucleus
its more reactive
why do elements in the same group have similar chemical properties (reactivity)
because they all have the same number of electrons in their outer shells
why is Rubidium banned in schools
because its very reactive (because its larger) and EXPLODES with WHITE SPARKS
what happens as you go UP the group
they get MORE REACTIVE because they are SMALLER
elements on the left are ... reactive and can ... those ... reactive than them. Fluorine can ... all the other halogens from their compound
- more
- displace
- less
- displace
eg F2 + 2NaCl –> 2NaF + Cl2
(2NaF because there are 2 fluorines ‘pushing them off the chairs)
the state and colour of FLUORINE
- gas
- pale yellow
the state and colour of CHLORINE
- gas
- yellow green
the state and colour of BROMINE
- liquid
- red
the state and colour of IODINE
- solid
- purple
how are HCl gas and hydrochloric acid different
