METALLIC BONDING- malleable metals Flashcards
1
Q
what does malleable mean
A
it means something can be ‘hammered into shape’
ductile= drawn into wires
2
Q
metals are both malleable and ductile because…
A
any force applied will move/ slide a layer of ions over each other,
but they will still be in the same environment,
held together by the sode-
3
Q
why is diamond/
ionic substances
not malleable
A
diamond= the covalent bonds in diamond need to be broken if a layer is to move, and this makes it brittle.
ionic substance= moving a layer causes ions to line up with the same charged ions (eg negative negative).
this causes them to repel each other and the layers to break (=brittle) eg sodium chloride
