PERIODIC TABLE- group 1 Flashcards

1
Q

what happens when lithium react with water?

A

1- floats (low density)
2- fizzes (hydrogen gas released)
3- UI turns purple (alkali) (from green= neutral)
4- moves around
5- stays in same shape, but dissolves (gets
smaller)
6- reacts with and dissolves into the water.

Q

what happens when sodium reacts with water

A

1- floats (low density)
2- fizzes (hydrogen gas released)
3- UI turns purple (alkali) (from green= neutral)
4- moves around
5- melts into a BALL
(gets very hot= hotter than Li= more reactive)

Q

how many electrons do they want to lose

A

one electron
therefore they all react similarly
but their reactivity changes due to their size

Q

what happens as they go down the group

reactivity explained

A
  • an extra shell is added (increasing the element size)
  • the outer electron is held in place by an electrostatic force/ attraction between the electron and the nucleus
  • the larger the distance between the outer electron and the nucleus, the less force the electron ‘feels’ and so it’s lost easier= more reactive
