COVALENT BONDING- melting points Flashcards
1
Q
the size of these molecules are…
A
small
and are NOT ATTACHED to anything else
2
Q
they are held together by…
A
VERY WEAK INTERMOLECULAR FORCES
3
Q
why do covalent compounds have very low melting points?
A
because we DO NOT BREAK bonds in simple molecules.
when heated we are just overcoming the very weak intermolecular forces (like magnets).
The larger molecules (protons in nucleus and shell number), the stronger the IMF and so the MP/ BP will INCREASE.
4
Q
why is CO2 very difficult to have as a liquid
A
because the INTERMOLECULARE FORCES are so easily overcome that it SUBLIMES.
