Periodic Table Flashcards
1
Q
How are elements arranged in the periodic table?
A
In order of atomic number, in groups and periods
2
Q
Metals (conductivity, oxide form, placement)
A
- Conduct electricity
- Form basic oxides (reacts with acids to form salts)
- Left-hand side
3
Q
Non-metals (conductivity, oxide form, placement)
A
- Don’t conduct electricity (graphite and silicon do)
- Form acidic oxides (react with bases/alkalis to form salts)
- Right-hand side
4
Q
What does the reactivity of an atom depend upon?
A
The number of electrons there are in the outer shell
5
Q
What do elements in the same group have?
A
The same number of valence electrons, therefore react in similar ways
6
Q
Why are noble gases unreactive?
A
Their outer shell is full so there is no need to gain or lose electrons in reactions
