Atomic Structure Flashcards
Atom
The smallest piece of an element that can still be recognised as that element
Molecule
Two or more atoms covalently bonded together. Contains a certain fixed number of atoms
Neutron
Found in the nucleus, 1 mass, no charge
Proton
Found in the nucleus, 1 mass, positive charge
Electron
Found in the shell, negligible mass, negative charge
Atomic number
The number of protons in an atom
Mass number
The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Relative atomic mass
The weighted average mass of the isotopes of an element relative to the mass of 1/12 of a carbon-12 atom
Isotope
Different atoms of the same element, with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons. Also have the same chemical properties
Ar
Mass of isotopes*percentage abundance over 100
