Chemical tests Flashcards
How do you test for hydrogen gas?
Test the gas with a lit splint and listen for a squeaky pop
How do you test for oxygen gas?
Relights a glowing splint
How do you test for carbon dioxide?
Bubble the gas through limewater and it turns cloudy/milky
How do test for chlorine gas?
It beaches moist litmus paper
How do test for ammonia gas?
Moist red litmus paper turns blue
How do you do a flame test?
Dip a clean piece of nichrome or platinum wire into concentrated hydrochloric acid and then into the sample of solid salt. Put the wire just into the non-luminous (roaring) flame of a Bunsen burner and observe the color
What colour is the flame test for lithium ions?
Red
What colour is the flame test for sodium ions?
Yellow
What colour is the flame test for potassium ions?
Lilac
What colour is the flame test for calcium ions?
Orange-red
What colour is the flame test for copper ions?
Blue-green
How do you test for cations?
Add sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution
What is the result of adding sodium hydroxide solution to iron (II) ions?
Green precipitate (Fe(OH)2)
What is the result of adding sodium hydroxide solution to ammonium ions?
Upon warming the gas turns red litmus paper blue
What is the result of adding sodium hydroxide solution to copper (II) ions?
Blue precipitate (Cu(OH)2)
What is the result of adding sodium hydroxide solution to iron (III) ions?
Orange-brown precipitate (Fe(OH)3)
What is the result of adding dilute nitric acid then silver nitrate solution to chloride ions?
White precipitate (AgCl)
What is the result of adding dilute nitric acid then silver nitrate solution to bromide ions?
Cream precipitate (AgBr)
What is the result of adding dilute nitric acid then silver nitrate solution to iodide ions?
Yellow precipitate (AgI)
How do you test for carbonate ions?
Add dilute hydrochloric acid then test the gas with limewater. It should turn cloudy/milky due to the carbon dioxide given off
How do you test for sulphate ions?
Add dilute hydrochloric acid then barium chloride solution to form a white precipitate of BaSO4
Why is acid added before reagent when testing for halides and sulphide ions?
To react with any carbonate ions which would also form a precipitate
How do you test for water?
It turns white anhydrous copper (II) sulphate blue
How do you test for pure water?
It boils at 100oc and freezes at 0oc
