Define: Bacon’s Rebellion
The Virginian rebellion where Bacon and his men (poor farmers and indentured servants) attacked Jamestown and demanded the governor’s (William Berkely) resignation due to his disregard for the Native American’s chaotic and destructive revolts that were caused by the European expansion upon American lands.
Define: Triangle Trade
The trading system among three ports/regions: Africa, the Americas, and Europe. Other names for the triangle trade would be the Columbian Exchange and/or trans-atlantic slave trade (components of the triangle trade which is used as an umbrella term).
Define: House of Burgesses
The first elected legislature assembly established in 1619 in the New World that was made up of elected representatives (2 per colony district [11 districts]) from Virginia.
Define: Joint-Stock Company
An economic model of funding that was private and not run by the state; A group of investors gathering money together to fund ventures (w/ shared risk [Venture success = overall profit success, venture failure = overall profit failure])
Define: Encomiendas
A grant by the Spanish Crown to a colonist in America granting the right to demand tribute and forced labor from the Native inhabitants if an area
Define: Headright system
A settlement plan developed during the colonial period in North America (early 16th century - 1776 [Revolutionary War]) to grant land to settlers withing the 13 colonies and was used as a way to attract new settlers to the region and address labor shortages.
Define: Mission System
The system that the (colonial) Spanish/Spaniards created due to their deep concern with and ambition for converting the Native Americans over to the religion of Christianity.
Define: Encomienda System
Forced labor enforced on the Natives by the Spanish
